Fruit and vegetable prices decrease again in Ukraine after a week of respite
Fruit-Inform Project's fruit and vegetable index shows that fruit and vegetable prices decreased by 11.3% in Ukraine last week, after a slight 2.3% increase a week earlier. In general, the Ukrainian market for fruits and vegetables has the price reduction trend remaining in effect since the mid-May of the current year.
“Notwithstanding difficult weather conditions, fruit, vegetable and potato prices continued to go down due to inevitable growth of supply during this period of the season”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “Prices decreased even notwithstanding problems with sufficient supply of some vegetables. As to the fruit market, it even had the price growth trend which, nevertheless, was not able to reverse the overall price decrease trend in the market for fruits and vegetables of Ukraine”, the expert continues.
It should be noted that last week the price increase was registered for tomatoes and onions as well as for some imported fruits (oranges, lemons, bananas, mandarins). Ukrainian apples grew in price too due to cheap early varieties gradually leaving the market and more expensive late varieties replacing the former in the supply structure.
At the same time, potatoes, red beets and cucumbers significantly decreased in price last week. The prices for domestic table grapes kept on falling too due to supply of this product rather dynamically increasing in the market.
