Traditional vegetables a third cheaper in Ukraine than last year

According to Fruit-Inform Project, as of August 20, 2011, the prices for traditional borsch vegetables (white cabbages, red beets, carrots and onions) were averagely a third cheaper in Ukraine than in the same period of last year. The main reason for such a situation lies in sharp growth of their supply in the market in the current season thanks to favorable weather conditions and further expansion of planted areas.

The sharpest decrease of prices was registered in the white cabbage segment: more than 2.5 times. Red beet prices are almost 40% lower, onion prices – 22% lower. Carrots decreased in price the least: only by 10%. Slump of potato prices should also be noted, as potatoes became almost 30% cheaper than last year.

The detailed fruit and vegetable price forecast for Ukraine for the second half of the current season and the following season will be presented at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter” which will take place during Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair, Kiev, Ukraine, November 30 – December 2, 2011. As to the fruit and vegetable price forecast for Russia for the second half of the season, it will be presented during the Fourth International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2011”. This event will take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 14, 2011. Registration of participation in these events is currently in active progress.
