Ukrainian farmers' troubles with cabbage and beet sales

According to Fruit-Inform Project, low prices and almost lacking demand for large lots of white cabbages and red beets in the Ukrainian market have already led to producers' considerable losses. Many did not harvest their crop at all, however the situation does not change in the market for about a month and a half.

As of today, only those producers who have their own sales outlets at wholesale and retail markets can sell their produce at acceptable prices. In particular, producers manage to sell white cabbages at UAH 0.80-1.10/kg (EUR 0.07-0.10/kg) and red beets at UAH 2.00-2.50/kg (EUR 0.17-0.22/kg) at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market in Kiev notwithstanding abundant supply. Prices are reduced by UAH 0.20-0.50/kg (EUR 0.02-0.04/kg) when selling large lots.

Due to problems with oversupply of most vegetables and potatoes in Ukraine in the current season, Fruit-Inform Project's analysts will devote much attention to marketing of fresh produce. More information about prospects of exports to Russia will be presented during the Fourth International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2011”. The event will take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 14, 2011. Registration of the conference participants is currently in active progress.

Moreover, Fruit-Inform Project's production and price forecast will be completed by October 1, 2011. The study will be broadened with information about quality of harvested fruits, vegetables and potatoes, prospects of their storage as well as Ukraine's storage capacity dynamics. Traditionally, the forecast will contain the detailed fresh produce production and trade statistics as well as full contact information of Ukraine's fruit and vegetable industry.
