Slump of onion prices in Russia

According to Fruit-Inform Project, onions sharply fell in price in all regions of the Russian Federation last week due to the start of harvesting of late onions against a background of relatively slack demand.

The average weekly price reduction rate amounted to RUB 1.00/kg (EUR 0.02/kg). Minimum onion prices were registered in Stavropol Krai where the supply was especially abundant. In addition, the prices were relatively low in Astrakhan and Vologda Oblasts and Krasnodar Krai. The sharp growth of onion supply was registered also in main consuming regions: Moscow and Saint Petersburg where prices fell to almost minimum levels too.

Average prices for onions varied within RUB 5.00-6.50/kg (EUR 0.12-0.16/kg) in producing regions and within RUB 6.00-7.00/kg (EUR 0.14-0.17/kg) in consuming regions.

More detailed information about Russia's market for onions and other fresh produce categories will be presented specially for attendees of the Fourth International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2011”. The event will take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 14, 2011. Registration of the conference participants is currently in active progress.
