Chile and Argentina sharply increase apple exports to Russia

According to Fruit-Inform Project, Chile and Argentina sharply increased their apple exports to Russia in 2011. In the first quarter of this year Russian importers purchased 22% more apples from Chile and 90% more apples from Argentina than in the whole year 2010. Such growth rates enabled Chile and Argentina to become Russia's fourth and third biggest apple suppliers respectively.

The Russian Federation increased its apple imports from the Southern Hemisphere mainly thanks to apple shortage in Poland and other EU countries in spring 2011. High prices for top-quality apples and their limited supply in the EU made importers seek for alternative in South America whose shipments were competitive thanks to alternate seasons there.

More detailed information about Russia's apple import prospects as well as about the Russian market for other fruits and vegetables will be presented at the Fourth International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2011”. The event will take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 14, 2011. Registration of the conference participants is currently in active progress.
