Have fresh produce prices touched the bottom in Ukraine?
Fruit-Inform's fruit and vegetable index shows that fruit and vegetable prices decreased by 0.5% in Ukraine last week, after more than 26% slump over the previous two weeks. In such a way, notwithstanding some market players' statements of further vegetable and potato price decrease being impossible in the market, prices keep on steadily falling. Moreover, the last week of September usually leads to even more considerable decrease of prices almost every year.
“Notwithstanding low level of the prices for traditional vegetables and potatoes, the price decrease potential is still not exhausted”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “The price slump is deterred by producers trying to store maximum quantities of their produce. At the same time, the prices may even grow for a slight period of time thanks to intermediaries to enter the market thinking prices to have reached their minimum levels”, the expert continues.
None of the fresh produce categories increased in price last week. Cucumber prices have shown the sharpest fall rate last week. The trend of slow decrease of onion, white cabbage and carrot prices also remained in effect. Potato prices kept on decreasing in some central regions of Ukraine. Lemons fell in price too.

The preliminary fruit and vegetable price forecast for the following season will be announced at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter”. The event will take place in conjunction with Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair which will be held at IEC, the most up-to-date exhibition center of Ukraine in Kiev, from November 30 to December 2, 2011.
