Current potato prices three times as low as in 2010 in Ukraine
According to Fruit-Inform, as of October 3, 2011, wholesale prices for potatoes are 3.2-fold lower year-on-year and keep on decreasing in Ukraine. Last week, the price fall trend reached eastern and southern Ukrainian regions which traditionally have potatoes in short supply.
Households sell potatoes at UAH 0.70-0.90/kg (EUR 0.07-0.08/kg). Sales are conducted even at UAH 0.60/kg (EUR 0.06/kg) in some regions. Such a price level is also fixed during bartering potatoes for watermelons in the northern, central and western regions of the country, which is rather popular in recent years. Professional producers having not concluded contracts receive purchase offers at UAH 1.00-1.30/kg (EUR 0.09-0.12/kg). However, in most cases, farmers prefer to store potatoes hoping for the price increase in winter.
