Russia's onion imports record low in August
According to Fruit-Inform, Russia sharply decreased its onion imports in August 2011, after the increase in supply of less expensive domestic onions in the internal market. In such a way, imports in August were the lowest in the past 6 years. According to Fruit-Inform's estimates, the same situation was also observed in September.
Current prices for onions are quite low in Russia. In addition, Russia's onion imports will most likely decrease sharply in the new season which will turn out to be rather hard for Dutch suppliers of this produce. Russia is one of the main target markets for onions from the Netherlands. In the new season, Dutch exporters will face a serious competition from the side of Ukrainian suppliers and Russia's internal onions.
More information about the current situation in the Russian and Ukrainian fresh produce markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly.
