Fruits and vegetables keep on falling in price in Ukraine
Fruit-Inform's fruit and vegetable index shows that fruits and vegetables fell in price by 7.2% in Ukraine last week. In such a way, the unprecedented fall of fruit and vegetable prices is still in effect notwithstanding the end of the summer fruit, berry and vegetable season. Moreover, the prices are record low over the past 3 years.
“Potatoes continue to account for the most important part in the Ukrainians' fresh produce consumption structure, therefore the last week's fall of potato prices played a key role leveling the seasonal growth of cucumber and tomato prices”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “Stabilization of the prices for traditional vegetables should also be noted, although harvesting of late carrots, red beets and white cabbages has not even started in many Ukrainian regions”, the expert continues.
We should note that the first week of October 2010 was marked by 2% fresh produce price decrease, and the second week of the same month – by 13% growth of prices! Currently, fruits and vegetables are averagely 2.6-fold less expensive year-on-year, and borsch vegetables (potatoes, onions, red beets, white cabbages, carrots) – averagely 3.4-fold less expensive. There are no categories currently being higher in price than in the same period of last year!

The preliminary Ukrainian fruit and vegetable price, production, import and export forecast for the following season will be announced at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter”. The event will take place in conjunction with Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair which will be held at IEC, the most up-to-date exhibition center of Ukraine in Kiev, from November 30 to December 2, 2011.
