Onions may be left unharvested in Russia

Due to pouring rains in the Southern and Central Federal Districts of Russia, farmers have not been able to harvest onions adequately since early October. According to Fruit-Inform, farmers are seriously concerned about such a situation: there still are a lot onions in fields, and the probability of some part of produce to be unharvested is very high because of probable fall in temperature. Farmers also report of the quality of produce suffering due to high humidity: such onions are not suitable to storage. In connection with this, the demand for dry high-quality onions started gradually growing. Owners of storehouses are actively purchasing produce; however, this has no impact on prices. They are still record low: RUB 3-5/kg (EUR 0.06-0.11/kg).

Will the prices for onions grow in Russia in the second half of the season, and will Ukraine manage to export its surplus of onions to the Russia market? These and many other questions regarding trade in fruits and vegetables will be answered at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter”. The event will take place in conjunction with Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair which will be held at IEC, the most up-to-date exhibition center of Ukraine in Kiev, from November 30 to December 2, 2011.
