Ukraine starts vegetable import season
According to Fruit-Inform, Ukraine began to import the first large lots of Turkish cucumbers last week. The cucumber import season started averagely 10 days earlier than a year before and concurred with the end of domestic enterprises' season. Sellers reported of the quality of imported cucumbers being satisfactory with prices averagely 20-30% lower than for the last lots of Ukrainian produce.
Summing up the season, Ukrainian greenhouse farms were not satisfied with the price levels for cucumbers of the second harvest: the season finished with almost the same prices as a year before, while production costs considerably grew. In addition, in many greenhouses, plants were seriously suffering from diseases in autumn that had a negative impact on the quality of produce and provoked earlier end of the season.
Ukraine has not started mass imports of other vegetables yet. We would remind you that Ukraine's prospects in international trade in fruits and vegetables in the season 2011/12 will be actively discussed at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter”.
The conference attendees will be able not only to receive the unique information about the Eastern European fresh produce sector at the conference and see the novelties in production, post-harvesting, processing and storage technologies at Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair, but also conduct negotiations between each other, make new contacts and strengthen their position in the Russian and Ukrainian markets thanks to the Trade Forum with leading Ukrainian and Russian retailers, importers and wholesalers.
