Polish producers see no price prospects in this season

According to Fruit-Inform, onion prices remain extremely low in Poland. High-quality onions are sold at EUR 0.04-0.05/kg; low-quality produce can be purchased even at EUR 0.03/kg. For comparison, Ukrainian farmers keep on trying to sell onions at EUR 0.07-0.08/kg, although report of practically no demand for such offers.

The situation in the Polish market is aggravated by the start of onion imports from the Netherlands, where a serious surplus of this produce is registered. For the present, Dutch onions are considerably higher in price than Polish ones. However, the difference in retail prices is not significant enough for consumers, therefore onions from the Netherlands find their buyers in Poland. According to such a situation, Polish farmers are pessimistic about onion pricing in this season and only glad to make further price concessions just to get rid of surplus produce.

We would remind you that more detailed information about the Eastern European market for potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbages, red beets, carrots) will be presented at the Fourth International Conference “Potatoes and Vegetables of Ukraine – 2012”, Kiev, Ukraine, February 16-17, 2012.
