15-fold decrease in Ukraine's cabbage exports, 2-fold decrease in potato exports
According to Fruit-Inform, all attempts of Ukrainian producers and wholesalers to sell surplus volumes of traditional vegetables and potatoes are insufficient to increase or even maintain exports.
“Ukrainian producers and wholesalers having available stocks of vegetables and potatoes have only 3-4 months to sell their produce. Moreover, stocks of these commodities are several times higher than internal consumption potential”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “At the same time, owners of potatoes and vegetables still count on higher prices in spring and do not hurry to sell their produce being unaware of elementary pricing principles”.
Furthermore, Ukraine's exports of traditional vegetables decreased significantly year-on-year. In the first 7 months of the current season, Ukrainian companies exported half as many potatoes as in the same period of the season 2010/11. Cabbage exports were 15 times lower year-on-year. The situation with other vegetables is rather difficult too.
