Ukraine: potato prices to remain low for a year and a half

Wholesale prices for potatoes will remain relatively low in Ukraine for a year and a half on condition of no weather force majeures during the growing period, Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform, was quoted as saying at the 4th International Conference “Potatoes and Vegetables of Ukraine – 2012”. The main reason for low prices lies in abundant stocks of seed and ware potatoes utilized as planting material.

Nevertheless, the expert expects a decrease in average yields as a result of lower use of fertilizers and inventory. At the same time, production costs will decrease too, as planting material (the main part of potato production costs) will be averagely three times lower in price. Accordingly, Mr. Yarmak expects the current season to be rather favorable for creation and development of potato farming system-based projects. At the same time, he attracted attention to a necessity of more serious approaches to efficiency, quality and marketing.

We would remind you that more detailed information about Ukrainian and Russian fruit and vegetable markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly Service Package.
