Too low consumption of fruits in Ukraine
According to Fruit-Inform, potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbages, red beets, carrots) account for the main share in Ukrainians' fruit and vegetable basket. In the beginning of 2012, the share of these products in the volume terms grew to the record 77% thanks to a sharp decrease in their prices. At the same time, their share in the value terms amounts to 7-10%.
“Notwithstanding a year-on-year decrease in prices for fruits, their consumption did not grow significantly, as fruit prices still seem to be much higher against a background of practically free traditional vegetables and potatoes. Last year, fruit prices and prices for traditional vegetables and potatoes were comparable that stimulated higher fruit consumption”, Mrs. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “At the same time, Ukraine is one of the European leaders in vegetable consumption and enters the group of top-three nations in potato consumption”, the expert adds.
