Ukraine: vegetable season ends, prices continue to fall
Fruit-Inform's fruit and vegetable index shows that the value of Ukrainians' fruit and vegetable basket fell by 9.8% last week, after a slight growth of 1.5% a week earlier.
“The main reasons for a sharp fall of the basket's value were a collapse of potato prices and a further decrease in prices for traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbages, red beets, carrots)”, Mrs. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, said. “The situation was not compensated even by a slight increase in fruit and greenhouse vegetable prices”, the expert continued.
Carrots (especially high-quality produce) were the most stable in price among traditional vegetables last week. At the same time, farmers actively threw out last year's white cabbages, as early produce from Zakarpattia (Western Ukraine) had been already available in the market.
