Weather favoured winter crops in the past portion of February
On the first ten days of February the wintering of cereals and perennial grasses went on under generally favourable temperature conditions, Ukrainian Centre for Hydro-Meteorology has informed.
Minimal soil temperature at the tillering node depth of cereals and perennial grasses did not drop below minus 1 to 6 degrees Celsius. Such soil temperature was considerably above the critical point of freezing-out, which constituted as of February 10 minus 15 to 16 degrees for winter wheat in the tillering phase and minus 14 degrees for winter wheat in the shooting phase; minus 15 degrees for winter rye and minus 11 degrees for winter barley.
As of February 10 the ice crust was retained only in some locations of Sumy, Chernigov, eastern parts of Kiev and northern parts of Poltava Oblasts. The thickness of the crust ranged between 3 and 33 mm. In other places the crust had been destructed. Although the duration of its lodgement had exceeded the critical one, it did not inflict any damage to the plants due to its insignificant thickness.
On the results of monoliths growing of winter crop samples, taken from the fields on January 25, the weather centre did not reveal any significant thinning of the plantings.
