Ukrainian apple producers may run into trouble because of record-breaking production

Specially for the 2nd International Conference “Apple Business of Ukraine & Russia – 2012”, Fruit-Inform's analysts have updated the Ukrainian apple production forecast which shows a high probability of record-breaking production of high-quality apples in the country. However, will farmers be happy for such a harvest?

"Unfortunately, the Ukrainian record-breaking apple production will most likely concur with record-breaking apple output in Russia. In addition, an increase in production is expected also in Poland and other EU countries that compete with Ukrainians in the Russian and Ukrainian apple markets", Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform Project, said. "Moreover, Russia will become a full member of the WTO in the nearest time that will open the Russian market for non-CIS countries. This means that Ukraine will lose its main advantage of duty-free apple exports to Russia. In such a way, not to lose its position in the Russian and Ukrainian markets, Ukranian suppliers will have to reduce prices for their apples. We expect Ukrainian farmers' losses to reach 87-97 mln euro in this season as a result of unfavorable market environment and changes in the market conditions."

Such damages are rather considerable for growers, as they mean a loss of an investment resource of 4,000-5,000 hectares under the most up-to-date and intensive apple orchards that are eventually able to give a half of the Ukrainian market for fresh apples.

More detailed information about Ukrainian apple production and price prospects in the season 2012/13 as well as the aftermath of Russia's entry into the WTO for apple suppliers will be presented at the 2nd International Conference “Apple Business of Ukraine & Russia – 2012” that will be held in Kiev, Ukraine, August 9-10, 2012.
