Ukraine: onion prices still lower year-on-year and continue to fall

According to Fruit-Inform, onion prices keep on decreasing in Ukraine under the influence of higher supply in the market. Current prices are 25% (or 0.05 euro/kg) lower year-on-year that corroborates our forecasts available in the fundamental study “Fruit & Vegetable Market of Ukraine – 2012: Results and Forecasts for the Next Season”.

“Ukrainian farmers from the southern regions of the country (accounting for the biggest share in Ukraine's commercial onion production) say of onion yields to be significantly lower year-on-year”, Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “For the present, onion prices are influenced by the previous season's price inertia, as the market is still supplied with last quantities of last year's produce. Moreover, such a situation is observed both in Ukraine and EU countries. Further pricing in Ukraine will depend on two factors: whether onion production will decrease to consumption level of the country, and whether Ukrainian onions will be in the demand in other countries”.

We would remind you that more information about current developments and future prospects in the Ukrainian and Russian fruit and vegetable markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly service package.
