Seasonal decrease in fruit and vegetable prices still in effect in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform's fresh produce index shows a continuing decrease in fruit and vegetable prices that became 3.1% lower in Ukraine last week. In such a way, in early August fruits and vegetables were 30.9% less expensive than in early July.

“The current season is characterized by lack of traditional price leaps in the mid-summer that occur in the segment of traditional vegetables as a result of transition from early to middle-season varieties and from middle-season to late ones”, Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform Project, said. “In this season, the supply of traditional vegetables significantly prevails over the demand that keeps on exerting pressure on prices”, the expert continued.

Last week, the most considerable contribution to a decrease in the fresh produce price index was made by prices of fruits and greenhouse vegetables. A further decrease in prices of some traditional vegetables (white cabbages, carrots, onions) and record low prices of potatoes (for this period of time) should also be noted.

Apple prices fell the most last week thanks to a further growth in the supply of early (summer) varieties under conditions of moderate demand in the market: consumers still preferred seasonal summer fruits (peaches, grapes, melons and watermelons). The season of those fruits was coming into the stage of an active increase in the supply. Watermelon prices fell by 27% last week.
