Russia: potato imports fall 3 times in season 2011/12

In the season 2011/12, Russia's potato imports fell 3 times compared with the season 2010/11. Such a sharp decrease in imports is connected with record-breaking potato production in the country and record low prices during all sales season. According to Fruit-Inform, Russia's potato production exceeded 33 mln tonnes in 2011 that was the highest level over the past 15 years.

Imports from Egypt (the main potato exporter to Russia in the previous season) fell 3 times. Shipments from the Netherlands (the second biggest potato exporter to Russia) decreased 6 times.

Russia's potato exports grew 2.5 times but, nevertheless, were 10 times lower than imports. Azerbaijan was the main importer of Russian potatoes. Export volumes to that country amounted to 43,000 tonnes and took the share of more than 90% of total Russian potato exports.

More detailed information about Russia's potato price and import prospects will be presented at the 5th International Conference "Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2012" that will be held in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 18, 2012. Special attention will be given to the impact of Russia's accession to the WTO on the foreign trade in fruits and vegetables.
