Sharp increase in fruit and vegetable prices in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform's fresh produce index shows a sharp increase in fruit and vegetable prices in Ukraine last week. The average price growth rate amounted to 15.9%. In such a way, fruit and vegetable prices returned to the level of the mid-July 2012 in the country.

“A sharp jump in prices was a result of worse weather conditions and lower harvesting rates as well as the finish of harvesting middle-season varieties”, Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “Nevertheless, fruit and vegetable prices are still averagely 30.7% lower year-on-year thanks to higher supply of traditional vegetables and potatoes”, the expert adds.

The most important factor favoring higher prices last week was the finish of field-grown cucumber harvesting campaign in the majority of regions. Tomatoes continued to become less expensive because of growing supply. At the same time, due to seasonal factors, potato and onion prices became higher.

Watermelon prices kept on increasing despite the season being in full swing. The main reason for higher prices was the demand prevailing over the supply because of relatively low watermelon yields in the current season.
