Fruit and vegetable prices continue to grow in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform's fresh produce price index shows a continuing increase in fruit and vegetable prices in Ukraine. Last week, prices grew by 10.7%, after a jump of 15.9% a week earlier. In such a way, the Ukrainian fresh produce price index has already reached the level of the second half of June having grown by more than 25% over the past 2 weeks.

“In the same period of last year, fruits and vegetables were decreasing in price due to high prices of the preceding season. For that reason, the current trend of the price growth is by no means surprising after more than a year of critically low prices of potatoes and vegetables”, Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “Current wholesale prices of the majority of traditional vegetables and potatoes are still fluctuating within the break-even point, while the Ukrainian fresh produce price index is 20% lower year-on-year”, the expert adds.

Last week, potatoes continuing to become more expensive made the most important contribution to an increase in the fresh produce price index. At the same time, even taking into account recent growth, potato prices kept on disappointing producers, as the majority of them did not cover even production costs when selling their produce. In addition, last week households started their potato harvesting campaign.

Traditional vegetables also slightly grew in price (by 3-7%) that was a usual trend, as harvesting of late varieties had not started yet. An increase in prices was also registered in the apple market thanks to earlier start of harvesting expensive early varieties. At the same time, cucumber prices somewhat decreased after the start of harvesting the second crop.
