14-fold increase in Ukraine's onion exports in July
According to Fruit-Inform, in July 2012, Ukraine exported more than 3,000 tonnes of onions that is almost 14 times higher year-on-year. It is also interesting that in the season 2011/12 almost a half of total onion exports were registered in the last month of the season (June).
Such a sharp increase in onion exports was a result of high demand for onions in Russia. We would remind you that winter onions had been seriously damaged in winter, therefore the demand for imported early produce was rather high in the Russian Federation in the first half of summer. In Ukraine, areas under winter onions had also seriously suffered from frosts; however, farmers did not manage to raise prices because of availability of last year's inexpensive produce in the market till the mid-summer with its prices varying between UAH 0.50-0.80/kg (EUR 0.05-0.08/kg).
Under those conditions, Ukrainian farmers had to export both last year's and early onions. In general, the Russian market situation favored Ukrainian exports. In early July, Ukrainian farmers started selling early onions at UAH 2-3/kg (EUR 0.20-0.30/kg). However, they had to reduce prices to UAH 1.00-1.70/kg (EUR 0.10-0.17/kg) after a while. Meantime, in Russia, onions were sold at RUB 8-14/kg (EUR 0.32-0.36/kg).
More detailed information about Russian onion price, production and import prospects will be presented at the 5th International Conference "Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2012" that will be held in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 18, 2012. Special attention will be given to the impact of Russia's accession to the WTO on the foreign trade in fruits and vegetables.
