Ukraine: fruit and vegetable prices keep on falling
Fruit-Inform's fresh produce price index shows a further decrease of 4.3% in fruit and vegetable prices in Ukraine last week, after a fall of 5.4% a week earlier, with lower prices of traditional vegetables and potatoes being the main reason for a decrease in the fresh produce price index.
“Households keeping on harvesting potatoes and the start of harvesting campaign of some traditional vegetables in the western regions led to the pressure on the market and lower prices”, Mrs. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “Moreover, higher prices of greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes because of worse weather conditions were less important for the market than a decrease in prices of traditional vegetables”, the expert adds.
A decline of 10% in prices of Ukrainian apples should also be noted. The reason for that was their too high level that had made apple exports to Russia impossible. Under conditions of ongoing apple picking, this factor started exerting significant pressure on prices.
In this season, to avoid last year's problems with low prices, Ukrainian producers will have to export about 70,000-100,000 tonnes of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, carrots, red beets) and at least 40,000 tonnes of apples with Russia being the main target market for those produce categories.
We would remind you that more information on Russia's produce import prospects will be presented at the 5th International Conference "Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2012" that will be held in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 18, 2012. Special attention will be given to the impact of Russia's accession to the WTO on the foreign trade in fruits and vegetables.
