Record low apple prices in Russia
Fruit-Inform price monitoring shows that current apple prices in Russia are the lowest in the past 3 years. Apples are now sold at Moscow markets at no higher than RUB 15-25/kg (EUR 0.37-0.62/kg). For comparison, in the mid-October 2011, apple prices reached RUB 27-32/kg that still was 5% lower compared with the same month of 2010. In October 2009 and 2008, average apple prices were RUB 18-25/kg and RUB 20-27/kg, respectively.
It should also be noted that in the previous 3 seasons Russian growers were able to raise prices of winter apples already in early October. This year, from August to the mid-October, apple prices were not revised at all with a prospect of growth in the nearest time being seriously doubtful. The supply of autumn and winter produce is still abundant in the Russian market now with sales of those apples being rather difficult even at low prices.
We would remind you that in 2012 Russia's apple production will be record high with produced volumes reaching 1.6 mln tonnes.
We would remind you that more information about current developments and future prospects in the Ukrainian and Russian fruit and vegetable markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly service package.
