Poland doubles pear imports
Poland has doubled pear imports in the past 3 years. The most significant import growth rate (40%) was registered in the previous season when the country imported almost 35,000 tonnes of pears with the Netherlands being the most important supplier with the share of 40% in Poland's total pear imports.
It should be noted that Poland increases its pear imports against a background of falling domestic production. Since record-breaking 2009 when Polish farmers picked 90,000 tonnes of pears, Polish pear production has almost halved. In 2011, domestic growers picked only 50,000 tonnes of these fruits, and in 2012, according to WAPA forecasts, pear production in the country will again fall at least by 10%.
