Sharp increase in Ukrainian fresh produce price index

Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index has sharply grown last week (by 13.3%), after a an increase of 1.9% a week earlier. In such a way, the price index has increased by over 15% in the past 2 weeks.

“For the first time in this season, the price index of potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, cabbage, beetroots, carrots) grew by 11.7% thanks to higher prices of potatoes and beetroots in the country”, said Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Snowfalls have led to fresh produce logistics problems that resulted in local growth in prices of almost all produce categories in certain regions of Ukraine. The sharpest price increase rates were registered in the segment of greenhouse vegetables that became almost 40% more expensive also due to higher prices in Turkey (main supplier)”.

An increase of 10% in apple prices should also be noted. Higher prices were a result of both more expensive customs procedures in Ukraine and higher purchasing activity in the market due to closer New Year holidays.

Fruit-Inform experts expect the fresh produce price index to continue to grow next week as snowfalls will be joined by frosts that will lead to the end of sales season in the segment of low-quality potatoes, vegetables and apples unsuitable for long-term storage.

We would remind you that more information about current developments and future prospects in the Ukrainian and Russian fruit and vegetable markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly service package.
