Hungarian growers to pick more apples in 2012/13

Hungarian growers are going to increase apple production by 39% to 418,000 tonnes in the season 2012/13.

According to WAPA (World Apple & Pear Association) estimates, a cardinal increase will be registered in production of Idared apples. In this season Hungarian farmers will pick 92,000 tonnes of these apples that is 80% higher year-on-year. Thanks to this result, the share of this variety in Hungary's total apple production is estimated to reach 22%, while a year earlier it was not higher than 17%.

Golden Delicious apples will be the second most grown variety in the country with their production to be 49% higher (63,000 tonnes). These apples will account for the share of 15% in total apple crop of Hungary.

An increase in production is also expected for Gala (by 57% to 38,000 tonnes) and Red Delicious (by 27% to 42,000 tonnes) apples.

At the same time, Jonathan variety will lose its position of the leader in production over the past 4 seasons. Harvested volumes of these apples will be 26% lower: just 59,000 tonnes. As a result, this variety will rank third in Hungary's apple production.

It should be noted that a decrease in production is also estimated for Jonagold apples: by 13% to 21,000 tonnes.
