A decrease in Ukrainian fresh produce price index
Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index decreased by 3.6% last week that was lower than expected after a jump of 40% in fruit and vegetable prices in December.
“The main reason for lower prices was a sharp fall in prices of imported cucumbers and tomatoes after New Year holidays”, said Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “At the same time, despite many market participants' expectations, the price index of traditional vegetables (onions, cabbage, beetroots, carrots) kept on growing and increased by 7.6% with the sharpest growth rate registered in the onion segment”.
More precisely, cabbage and beetroots became 7-8% more expensive, while onion prices went up by 17% that was favored by an increase in exporters' demand.
Fruit prices were stable in the majority of cases as suppliers had not managed to raise them in the pre-holiday period due to steady fruit supply and demand balance in the country.
