Russia: apple prices 20% lower year-on-year

Fruit-Inform price monitoring shows a year-on-year decrease in apple prices in the Russian market in the first half of the season 2012/13 due to the country's accession to the WTO and higher internal production.

As at late December 2012, average wholesale prices of apples in Moscow and Moscow region were 20% lower year-on-year. A decrease in prices in other regions was more appreciable. For example, prices in Voronezh region fell by a third.

Fruit-Inform analysts connect lower apple prices with reduction of import duties in Russia after entrance to the WTO combined with record high production in 2012. However, the market participants expect an increase in apple prices in view of higher demand in the past 2 weeks.

We would remind you that more detailed information about Russian and Ukrainian apple business with 5-year outlook is available in the fundamental study “Apples of Ukraine & Russia — 2013: Present Situation and Prospects in Growing, Storage, Handling, Processing and Marketing”.
