Onions start growing in price in Ukraine
According to Fruit-Inform, a long-awaited increase in onion prices was registered in Ukraine after New Year holidays. Growth in prices to UAH 0.60-1.00/kg (EUR 0.06-0.09/kg) touched the segment of high-quality produce. At the same time, prices of low-quality onions remained rather low.
The market experts connect higher prices with several factors. Firstly, the demand for onions grew in the internal market. Secondly, in the first 2 weeks of January, Ukrainian exporters increased purchase volumes for sales in Moldova, Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria.
Moreover, Fruit-Inform analysts note that some growers almost stopped selling after price growth having fixed prices at UAH 1.20-1.50/kg (EUR 0.11-0.14/kg).
We would remind you that high-quality onions were very difficult to be sold even at UAH 0.50-0.80/kg (EUR 0.05-0.08/kg) before New Year holidays. Some farmers were ready to sell their produce at UAH 0.40/kg (EUR 0.04/kg) that brought no results too.
More detailed information about the Ukrainian onion market will be presented at the 5th International Conference “Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2013” that is to take place in Kiev, Ukraine, February 19-20, 2013.
