Russia: record high imports of Moldovan apples in January
According to Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation, in January this year, the country tripled imports of Moldovan apples year-on-year to 16,400 tonnes, the record high result over the past 6 seasons. For comparison, Moldova exported just 5,700 tonnes of apples to Russia in January 2012. Russia's cumulative imports of Moldovan apples in the first 7 months of the season 2012/13 amounted to 137,000 tonnes.
An increase in apple exports enabled Moldova to improve its position among Russia's apple trade partner countries. In January 2012, Moldova ranked just fourth in apple exports to the Russian Federation. However, in January this year, this country was the second largest exporter of apples to Russia. Poland was the largest supplier, China ranked third.
