Sharp decrease in vegetable prices in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index decreased by 1.6% last week after practically no price fluctuations over the past 2 months. Moreover, last week was one of the most unstable for the fruit and vegetable market this year, as vegetable prices decreased, and fruit prices grew in Ukraine.

“Greenhouse vegetables became 9% less expensive. The aggregate price index of potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots) went down by 4.2%. However, a decrease in prices of beetroots, carrots and potatoes was minimal last week”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform.

The fruit price index became 1.3% higher thanks to an increase in prices of bananas and citrus fruits. At the same time, the citrus price growth was observed against a background of a decrease in consumption of these fruits in Ukraine.

It should be noted that Ukrainian farmers' hopes of higher demand for potatoes and traditional vegetables due to closer Great Lent were not realized. It was last week when bargain sales of vegetables rapidly losing their salable condition started and negatively affected prices of high-quality vegetables. The majority of growers and wholesalers expect a further decrease in prices of potatoes and traditional vegetables this week despite Great Lent.

We would remind you that more information about current developments and future prospects in the Ukrainian and Russian fruit and vegetable markets is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly service package.
