Fruit and vegetable prices jump in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index jumped by 15.4% last week after more than 2-month lull and fluctuations of about 1.5%. Fruit and vegetable prices jumped due to difficult weather conditions in the country, which led to irregular shipments. Furthermore, the market was influenced by a seasonal factor of a decrease in stocks of high-quality produce. For comparison, in the previous season, prices grew just by 1.5% in the last week of March; and their levels were 30% lower than current prices.

“The most significant price growth was registered in the segment of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots), which became averagely 26% more expensive. Potato prices also grew by 18.2% last week”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “In addition to logistics problems caused by bad weather conditions, the price growth was backed by lower stocks of high-quality produce and Russian importers' higher demand for Ukrainian vegetables”.

An increase of 8.3% in the fruit price index was registered thanks to higher prices of bananas and apples in Ukraine. According to Fruit-Inform analysts' estimates, banana prices may go down this week, whereas apple prices will most likely continue to grow.
