Fruit and vegetable price growth in Ukraine
Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index kept on growing last week and went up by 19.3% (the highest increase rate in 2013). Thus, fruits and vegetables have become 34.7% more expensive over the past 2 weeks.
For comparison, fruit and vegetable prices decreased by 9.8% in the first week of April 2012. Furthermore, as at April 2013, fruits and vegetables were 92.7% more expensive year-on-year. In other words, fruit and vegetable prices have almost doubled compared with April of the previous year.
“Despite better weather and logistics conditions last week, prices of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots) and potatoes were rapidly growing. Traditional vegetables became 15.6% more expensive; potato prices increased by a third”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “The market was positively impacted by lower supply of nonstandard produce offered at dumping prices and higher demand for high-quality products both internally and externally. An increase in prices of traditional vegetables and potatoes was not compensated even by a sharp fall of 21.2% in cucumber prices and a continuous decrease in banana prices”.
Carrots led in the price growth last week. These vegetables became 15-30% more expensive in almost all regions of Ukraine. Price increase rates were even higher in some regions. Furthermore, prices of all traditional vegetables became higher. At the same time, farmers preferred to wait with active sales hoping for a further increase in prices in the nearest time.
