Fresh raspberries lose popularity to frozen berries in global trade

According to Fruit-Inform data, despite developing quality retention technologies, the leading EU countries' fresh strawberry exports have been decreasing over the past five years. At the same time, exports of frozen raspberries have been stably growing.

“Poland, the largest exporter in the EU, have reduced fresh raspberry exports by 31% over the past five years. Over the same period, exports of Serbian fresh raspberries fell by 77%, and Spanish exports were 10% lower”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “At the same time, exports of frozen raspberries grew in Poland by 30%, Serbia raised exports by 7%, and Spanish exports were 31% higher. Spain, however, remained a relatively small exporter of frozen raspberries”.

Fruit-Inform analysts also note that Polish and Serbian frozen raspberry exports were 6 times and 39 times, respectively, of exports of fresh berries. Such a fact is connected with raspberries being one of the most perishable commodities among all softfruit categories. This complicates their long-distance delivery due to raspberries rapidly losing their quality during transportation. At the same time, the demand for off-season fresh raspberries has been actively growing in the EU. The EU countries receive those berries in winter from the Southern Hemisphere by air. As a rule, fresh raspberries are re-exported through the Netherlands and Belgium to other EU countries, Central and Eastern Europe.

As regards the Ukrainian fresh and frozen berry market, more information about it will be presented at the 4th International Conference “Berries of Ukraine – 2013: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market” which is to take place in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, May 16-17, 2013.
