Poland loses ground in the global frozen strawberry market
Poland has been losing ground in the global frozen strawberry market over the past few years. According to Fruit-Inform data, Poland now is third largest exporter of frozen strawberries in the world after China and Mexico, whereas five years ago Poland had been the global leader.
Furthermore, simultaneously with lower exports, Poland has been actively increasing frozen strawberry imports. Over the past 5 years, Polish companies have doubled imports of frozen strawberries and reduced exports by 35%.
Such a trend shows a stable level of internal frozen strawberry consumption in Poland. Nevertheless, the country keeps on steadily decreasing its internal production of frozen strawberries. An annual decrease of 1.5-2% in production against a background of stable demand and higher imports shows lower profitability of the domestic sector directly connected with high cost of raw strawberries. Polish farmers focus more on the fresh market, where prices are stably growing. Moreover, crop losses due to unfavorable weather conditions are regularly reported in Poland and also back higher prices. In such a way, it is no wonder that Polish frozen strawberries have been gradually losing ground both in the internal market and globally.
