Sharp decrease in Ukrainian fresh produce price index over first half of May 2013
Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index shows a sharp decrease in fruit and vegetable prices in the country over the first half of May 2013. The fresh produce price index became 10.1% lower over that period.
At the same time, despite a significant price reduction, the fresh produce price index is currently 91.7% higher year-on-year. “A traditional seasonal decrease in prices of greenhouse vegetables was the main reason for lower price index in Ukraine”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “In addition, traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots) and potatoes became averagely 3.9% less expensive”.
At the same time, the price index of fruits became higher over the first half of May 2013 due to an increase in prices of apples, mandarins and lemons, which was not compensated by lower prices of strawberries and bananas. The market experts also noted of a sharp decrease in consumption of citrus fruits, bananas and apples due to higher supply of early vegetables and berries in the country. In particular, lower prices of strawberries had an extremely positive impact on their sales.
