Ukraine's fruit import values exceed $1 bln
According to Fruit-Inform estimates, Ukrainian importers have spent more than $1 bln for imported fruits in the season 2012/13.
“For the first time ever, Ukraine has spent more than $1 bln for fruit imports. We estimate the total fruit import values to stand at $1,14 bln in the season 2012/13 (July-June)”, says Ms Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “The import values have grown by impressive 55% year-on-year. Usually they amounted to about $600-700 mln. On the one hand, such a trend is rather alarming for Ukrainian growers. On the other hand, it shows a certain potential in the internal fruit production growth”.
Citrus fruits and bananas not grown in Ukraine account for the share of about three quarters in the country's total fruit imports. At the same time, Ukraine still spend more than 7% for apple imports. Furthermore, the apple import values were 13 times of the apple export values in the season 2012/13.
More information about the Ukrainian apple market development, sector opportunities and export potential will be presented at the 3rd International Conference “Apple Business of Ukraine & Russia – 2013”, which is to take place on August 15-16, 2013, Donetsk, Ukraine.
