Fruit and vegetable price reduction accelerates in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index shows more rapid fruit and vegetable price reduction. In the period from July 13th to 19th, the fresh produce price index became 14.2% lower, after a decrease of 11.4% a week earlier. In such a way, fruits and vegetables have become about 25% less expensive over the previous two weeks.

“A seasonal decrease in prices (traditional in the second half of July and the whole August) was registered in all main segments of the fresh produce markets”, says Ms Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “The sharpest price reduction rate was observed in the segment of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots): by 22.1% on average week-on-week. Cucumbers and tomatoes became 19.6% less expensive. A significant decrease in prices was also registered in the markets for potatoes and many seasonal fruits”.

Despite a rapid decrease in prices, active exports were registered only in the watermelon segment. Exports of other products were irregular. At the same time, the share of imported produce in the Ukrainian market was not high too.

White cabbage was the only vegetable category that has grown in price last week. An increase in price levels is connected with an off-season period and unfavorable weather conditions in the western regions. Prices of raspberries and currants also somewhat grew due to the end of harvesting campaign.
