Record high onion prices in Ukraine
Onion prices keep on growing in Ukraine according to Fruit-Inform price monitoring with a record high price level for October having been registered at Kopani Wholesale Market (Kherson region) this week.
“Current wholesale prices at Kopani Market have exceeded UAH 5/kg (EUR 0.46/kg), which is the highest level ever for October”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “In the previous years, prices at that market were not higher than UAH 4/kg (EUR 0.37/kg) in the first ten days of October, even in harvestless 2010”.
Growers' prices are also record high for October, which, nevertheless, does not stimulate sales. Prices of high-quality onions have already quintupled compared with October 2012, when they were record low. In addition, current prices are 2.4 times of average in early October in the past 9 years and 3.2 times of usual in this period. As a rule, prices do not exceed UAH 1.20/kg (EUR 0.11/kg) in the first 10 days of October.
As a result, Ukrainian importers started purchasing onions from Russia, where prices are half as high. For the present, imports are insignificant, and produce is imported to border regions, though the demand for Russian onions continues to increase in Ukraine.
Onion prices in Poland are also considerably lower than in Ukraine. Currently, Polish growers ship produce at prices averagely 40% lower than ones set by Ukrainian farmers. At the same time, the Polish market has also been characterized by positive price performance due to demand prevailing over supply.
We would remind you that more detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments will be presented at the 10th Anniversary International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2013”, November 26-28, 2013, International Exhibition Center, Kiev, Ukraine.
