Further increase in Ukrainian fresh produce price index
Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index grew by 0.8% in the week from October 5th to 11th, after an increase of 16.4% a week earlier. In such a way, the fresh produce price index has been growing in Ukraine for the 7th week in a row.
“Despite better weather conditions and good progress in harvesting traditional vegetables and potatoes, prices of onions and carrots kept on growing”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “At the same time, potatoes and table beets became slightly more expensive last week, while white cabbage prices did not change as harvesting of late varieties had not started yet”.
The largest contribution to an increase in the price index was made by greenhouse vegetables (cucumbers and tomatoes), which became 18.9% more expensive in connection with the end of the season. The price growth in the segment of greenhouse vegetables started earlier than usual due to unfavorable weather conditions in September.
The fresh fruit segment was characterized by stability in prices. The balance between supply and demand in the apple market was kept, while the supply of citrus fruits (relatively inexpensive in the current season) continued to grow stimulating consumer demand.
