Russia goes down in global onion importers ranking

According to Fruit-Inform, thanks to an increase in domestic production, Russia was just the fifth largest importer of onions in 2012 after being the leader in 2010 and 2011.

We would remind you that almost all top importers of onions have lowered imports of onions in 2012. A decrease in imports in Malaysia, Japan, the USA and the UK was insignificant: by about 2-8%. However, Russia's imports were half as high, Germany reduced onion imports by 15% year-on-year, Indonesian importers purchased 34% less onions, the Netherlands' imports were 16% lower, and Sri Lanka cut imports by 14%. Among top importers, only Cote d'Ivoire and France have significantly raised imports of onions.

Ukraine was a large exporter of onions in the season 2012/13. However, in the season 2013/14, the country will most likely lose its status of a net exporter. More detailed information about the Ukrainian onion market developments as well as other fruit and vegetable sectors will be presented at the 10th Anniversary International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2013”, November 26-28, 2013, International Exhibition Center, Kiev, Ukraine.
