Turkey to increase tomato production in 2013
Turkish growers expect a further increase in tomato production in the country, according to TurkStat. It is estimated that growers will harvest 11.8 mln tons of tomatoes in 2013, an increase of 4% year-on-year.
Turkey has been raising tomato production year by year, which enables the country to keep its position of one of the top 5 tomato producing countries in the world. For the present, Turkey ranks fourth in global tomato production and is behind only China, USA and India. Turkish tomato production has grown by 10% in 2011 and by another 3% in 2012.
Stably high demand for tomatoes in the external market and high internal consumption stimulate Turkish growers to invest in tomato production. In addition, low production costs in Turkey thanks to favorable climatic conditions back the competitive strength of Turkish produce in the global market. Turkish exports reach about 1.2 mln tons annually. Russia and EU account for about 30% of those volumes each. Ukraine is the third largest export market with the share of 8% in Turkey's total tomato exports.
