Lower demand for potatoes in Russia
According to Fruit-Inform, trading activity in the Russian potato market has been going down since last week. Despite farmers' hopes for an increase in prices after fall in temperature, potato prices have been stable for more than a month in the Russian Federation.
Nevertheless, Russian farmers do not complain about current season, as potato prices have doubled compared with last year due to a decrease in yields in the country connected with unfavorable weather conditions. Many farmers say of worse quality of grown potatoes simultaneously with lower harvest. Such a situation lead to large supply in the Russian potato market, as growers try to sell their stocks as soon as possible as the quality of potatoes often is unsuitable for long-term storage.
For the present, lower sales rates had no impact on prices. Nevertheless, the majority of farmers hope that prices would start growing in January. Importers hold the same opinion and actively conclude contracts with Egyptian suppliers. Potatoes of Egyptian origin are expected to arrive in the Russian market already in February.
What prices of Egyptian potatoes are expected to be fixed in Ukraine under conditions of high competition for Egyptian produce between the EU and Russia? This and many other questions will be answered at the 6th International Conference “Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014”, which is to be held on February 20, Kiev.
