Frosts may provoke further growth in fruit and vegetable prices in Ukraine
Frosts may provoke a further increase in fruit and vegetable prices in Ukraine, according to Fruit-Inform.
“The supply of produce traditionally goes down after a decrease in temperature”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Owners of unequipped storage facilities do not sell their produce during frosts. In their turn, farms with equipped storage facilities have an opportunity to raise prices”.
The experts believe that consumers' prices may also grow. Small business intermediaries have folded their operations at outdoor markets after a decrease in temperature, and now produce is sold through supermarket chains, which often have higher purchase prices. In addition, both growers and retail chains will try to cover additional transportation costs. Suppliers say of some transport companies to have already raised their fees by 5-10%.
“Fruits and vegetables are very sensitive to low temperatures, therefore transportation involves additional costs to maintain the temperature”, adds Ms. Getman.
We would remind you that more detailed information about the current state and future developments in the Ukrainian and Russian market for potatoes and vegetables will be presented at the 6th International Conference “Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014”, which will be held on February 20, 2014, President Hotel, Kiev, Ukraine.
