Russia: livestock industry performances in April

As of May 1, 2004 the number of cattle, kept by all categories of Russian livestock-breeders, was estimated in 26.1 million heads (5.8 percent down from the same date of last year), of which there were 11.1 million heads of cows (5.5 percent down). The number of hogs was 16.0 million (10.2 percent down from last year), of sheep and goats - 19.4 million (3.9 percent up).

In April 2004 all categories of Russian livestock breeders produced 500,000 tonnes of animals and poultry for slaughter (in live weight), which is by 100,000 tonnes less than the month before, 3 million tonnes of milk (by 600,000 tonnes more) and 3 billion eggs (by 200 million more).

In January-April 2004 the farmers produced 2.2 million tonnes of animals and poultry for slaughter (live weight), 9.1 million tonnes of milk and 11.2 billion eggs.

By the beginning of May 2004 the provision of livestock with feeds, calculated per one conventional head, in Russian agricultural organisations had constituted 0.37 tonne of feed units, which is 2.6 percent lower than as of the same date last year.
