Ukraine: record low imports of apples in January
Ukraine's apple imports in January 2014 were the lowest over the past 5 years, according to the official statistics.
The import volumes stood at just 1,200 tons against 2,760 tons in the same month of the previous year. Ukraine's cumulative imports of apples in the first 7 months of the season 2013/14 totaled 3,600 tons, half of imports in the same period of the previous season.
Such a sharp decrease in imports is connected with rather large supply of domestic apples as well as rather moderate demand for those fruits in Ukraine.
Poland is traditionally the leading supplier of apples to Ukraine with the share of 89% in Ukraine's total imports over the first 7 months of the current season. The Netherlands and Greece exported relatively large volumes too.
