Ukrainian fresh produce price index down

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went down by 0.4% in the week from March 8th to 14th, after an increase of 0.1% a week earlier. In such a way, fruit and vegetable prices have become lower for the first time over the past 2 months. Nevertheless, the price index is still significantly higher compared with the same period of the previous season.

“There were only several significant changes in prices last week. White cabbage became 10-15% more expensive in main producing regions”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “At the same time, a jump in white cabbage prices was compensated by a sharp decrease in prices of greenhouse cucumbers”.

It should be noted that the demand for fruits and vegetables was extremely low in Ukraine last week due to a decrease in households’ income, negative performance in consumer sentiment index and a slight decay in Ukrainian tourism sector. Analysts estimate that those factors prevented the fresh produce price index from being 15-20% higher.
